Price Negotiation as a Freelancer: How to Confidently Set Your Rates
Many freelancers undersell themselves. Learn how to lead price negotiations confidently.
"That's too expensive" - a phrase many freelancers fear. But with the right strategy, you negotiate confidently.
Know Your Own Value
Calculate your minimum hourly rate:
- Desired annual income
- + Taxes and social contributions
- + Operating costs
- ÷ Billable hours
Negotiation Strategies
1. Set the Anchor
Name your price first - whoever names the first price sets the frame.
2. Communicate Value
Sell results, not hours: "This project will bring you X € in revenue."
3. Offer Package Prices
No discussion about hours - customer knows exactly what they get.
4. Give Options
Three options: Basic, Standard, Premium - most choose the middle.
Respond to Objections
"That's too expensive": "Let me explain how the price is composed..."
"Freelancer X is cheaper": "The question is whether you'll get the same result..."
